Definition
(Noun) Hard solders melt above ~ 250 degrees C and contain no lead, tin, indium, zinc. Two typical eutectic hard solders are: 80Au/20Sn with a melting point of 278 degrees C and 88Au/12 Ge with a melting point of 356 degrees C.When applied to Au-plated surfaces in an inert atmosphere such as forming gas, pure hydrogen or high vacuum, they can be achieved with no requirement for flux and are fully hermetic: i.e. have no measurable He-leak-rate.
Usage: He preferred to use a hard solder for microelectronic packages so that no flux residues were left in the hermetically sealed package.
